Expert Council
The Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) and Ethics Expert Council of the Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI) is an independent advisory body established to provide strategic guidance on ethical collaboration and compliance with ABS frameworks. The Council supports equitable partnerships between data users and the PTFI’s Centers of Excellence (COEs) and partners by navigating the legal and procedural aspects of ABS implementation and its ethical dimensions, especially surrounding the implications of food collection. The Council aims to ensure that the PTFI and its partner institutions uphold ethical and legal commitments in relation to ABS, aligning with international agreements, national laws, and community concerns.
The Council comprises experts in ABS policies, ethics in genetic resource use, and community engagement, representing interdisciplinary perspectives from research institutions, Indigenous Peoples and local community leaders, and legal professionals across diverse geographies. Council members advise on ethical decision-making related to the use of digital sequence information (DSI), genetic resources, and associated traditional knowledge. Council members also support COEs in understanding and implementing ABS best practices within their respective jurisdictions, facilitate knowledge-sharing among COEs on ABS processes, and develop recommendations to ensure ethical and legal compliance.
